The 81-year-old father of the Duchess of Sussex was rushed into emergency surgery<\/em> earlier this week in the Philippines, after falling alarmingly ill at home under the care of his son, Thomas Jr<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What began as a routine concern spiraled into a terrifying medical emergency<\/em> when doctors discovered a blood clot<\/strong> in his leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three Hours in Surgery to Save His Life<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday, 3 December<\/strong>, doctors performed a harrowing three-hour operation<\/strong>, amputating his left foot and lower leg<\/strong> after the clot cut off circulation<\/strong> and turned the limb blue \u2014 then black<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy dad is being very brave,\u201d Thomas Jr shared<\/u><\/a>. \u201cHis foot turned blue and then black. It happened very quickly. I took him to a local hospital and they did some scans and an ultrasound and said the leg had to be amputated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The choice, he said<\/u><\/a>, was devastating \u2014 but unavoidable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere was no option. I was told the leg had to be removed and it was a case of life or death.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Still in ICU \u2014 And Another Operation Looms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tragically, Thomas Sr\u2019s ordeal isn\u2019t over. He remains in the ICU in stable condition<\/strong>, awaiting another procedure<\/strong> to remove a second blood clot<\/strong>, this time higher up in his left thigh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to his son, doctors are \u201cextremely concerned\u201d<\/strong> about the his condition following the traumatic amputation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of his doctors said the next two or three days are critical,\u201d Thomas Jr said<\/u><\/a>. \u201cThey were worried about infection setting in \u2014 sepsis or gangrene<\/strong>. The flesh was black and dying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Physicians treating Thomas Sr, who spoke to the Daily Mail with his permission, also confirmed just how fragile<\/strong> the coming days could be, citing the risk of infection as a looming threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need to make sure the wound heals and does not become infected,\u201d one doctor warned<\/u><\/a>. \u201cAt the moment he is in stable condition and doing well<\/strong>. But, at his age, that could change quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The update comes after mounting concern for the Markle patriarch, whose health has declined in recent years. As we previously reported, Thomas Sr was rushed to hospital on Tuesday, 2 December, after falling gravely ill at home. Doctors quickly determined the situation was life-threatening.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey did various scans and the doctors said his life was in imminent danger,\u201d his son Thomas Jr<\/strong> told<\/u><\/a> the Daily Mail. \u201cThey raced us by ambulance, with the sirens going, to a much bigger hospital in the centre of the city.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ailing Thomas Sr underwent a gruelling three-hour operation<\/strong> on Wednesday and was sent to the intensive care unit<\/strong>, awaiting a second surgery<\/strong> to remove his first blood clot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas Sr has long been in declining health<\/strong>. In 2018, just days before Meghan\u2019s royal wedding, he suffered two heart attacks<\/strong> and was forced to cancel his trip to London.
