A revealing investigation into the covert realm of private security forces in Iraq.
Thousands of private soldiers are active in Iraq, with many more globally. These individuals, referred to as private security contractors, are reshaping modern warfare daily, yet their operations remain largely unknown to those at home. “Shadow Company” is a pioneering documentary that uncovers the backgrounds and activities of these contemporary mercenaries. Who are these contractors? What are their roles.

Purpose Films presents an engaging and innovative exploration of the private individuals who have transformed warfare, diverging from traditional documentary formats. The narrator, now part of a private security firm named Shadow Company, operates in Baghdad’s Green Zone. This heavily fortified area shelters the Coalition Provisional Authority, secured by a large perimeter of US troops.
His company specializes in close protection under a significant contract, employing 200 staff members. He follows a 6-on, 3-off work rotation and describes his company as “fairly sharp,” particularly when compared to other potentially reckless contractor groups. A strong personal motivation drives him: a commitment to return home to his loved ones. The security contractor resides in a villa within the Baghdad Green Zone, an area that has transitioned from ruin to relative security due to its robust defenses.
