After losing his job, Jimmy Logan persuades his brother Clyde and sister Mellie to join him in robbing the Charlotte Motor Speedway during a NASCAR event. They need the help of Joe Bang (Daniel Craig), a safecracker who is currently incarcerated. Their plan includes freeing Joe, blowing up the racetrack’s safe, escaping with the stolen money, returning Joe to jail, and ensuring Jimmy gets to his daughter’s beauty pageant on time. What could possibly go wrong? This is the Logan family’s bad luck.
Jimmy is let go from his construction position at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. While picking up his daughter Sadie from her pageant practice, he discovers that his ex-wife Bobbie Jo and her new husband are relocating to Lynchburg, making visitations more difficult for him. He then goes to visit his brother Clyde, a war veteran who lost his hand in Iraq.
An arrogant British businessman named Max Chilblain shows up, insults Clyde, and sparks a fight with Jimmy. In retaliation, Clyde sets fire to Max’s car using a Molotov cocktail. As they leave, Jimmy shouts “cauliflower,” a code word from their teenage years that Clyde recognizes. The following day, Jimmy shares his scheme to rob the Speedway, relying on his understanding of their pneumatic tube system to move the cash.
