A few days later, on the day they plan to escape, Frank puts a chrysanthemum on the table to honor Doc during mealtime. The warden comes by and crushes the flower, reminding Frank of the rules. Litmus gets angry, but when he attempts to confront the warden, he has a heart attack and dies. Later, the warden orders a search of Frank’s cell but finds nothing out of the ordinary. However, after learning that Frank and Charley are staying up late to talk, he decides to move them to separate cells immediately. Meanwhile, Wolf is released from solitary and aims to stab Frank with a knife, but English stops him.

That night, Frank, John, Clarence, and Charley plan to meet in the passageway for their escape. Unfortunately, Charley panics and doesn’t show up. With the flotation gear, Frank and the brothers climb onto the roof while avoiding the searchlights. They then slide down the side of the building into the prison yard, get over a barbed-wire fence, and head towards the island’s shore where they inflate the raft. The three of them enter the water and start swimming.
The following morning, a guard wakes Frank up to prepare him for a move to a different cell. When he doesn’t respond, the guard hits him on the head, causing it to roll away. An alarm goes off, and English smirks, realizing that Frank has escaped. As police conduct their search, there’s no proof regarding the survival of the three inmates. However, the warden, eager to maintain his flawless record, claims they drowned. He discovers a chrysanthemum on a rock by the shore and tosses it into the water. The outcomes for Frank, Clarence, and John remain a mystery, even after a thorough FBI investigation.
